Top 5 overlooked food triggers - A nutritionist-led guide to unexpected culprits

When people think about food sensitivities, the usual suspects come to mind: gluten, dairy, or maybe soy. But in practice, it’s often the more unexpected foods or ingredients that keep people stuck in cycles of bloating, fatigue, or skin flare-ups.

As a nutritionist working closely with clients, I’ve seen how unique these triggers can be. The same food that’s harmless to one person can be disruptive to another. To bring this to life, here are five short stories that highlight some of the most overlooked culprits.

1. Coffee – Priya’s story

Jenny prided herself on starting each morning with a healthy apple and a black coffee. The apple was never the problem, but the coffee left her jittery, bloated, and with afternoon crashes. We discovered it wasn’t just the caffeine, but compounds in coffee beans that can irritate sensitive digestion. Cutting back and switching to herbal teas gave her energy that lasted all day.

2. Artificial sweeteners – Sam’s story

Sam swapped to “sugar-free” drinks, thinking he was doing his body a favour. But within weeks he noticed bloating, headaches, and sugar cravings that never quite went away. Some artificial sweeteners disrupt gut bacteria or trigger digestive discomfort, and for Sam this was the hidden driver. Replacing them with small amounts of natural sweeteners like honey made all the difference.

3. Yeast – Katie’s story

Katie loved baking bread on weekends, but noticed fatigue and sinus issues creeping in afterwards. It wasn’t wheat or gluten for her—it was yeast. Once she experimented with yeast-free breads and crackers, her energy lifted and her nasal congestion disappeared. Yeast is a surprisingly common trigger for some, even though it rarely gets much attention.

4. Toothpaste additives – James’s story

Not every trigger comes from food on your plate. James had ongoing mouth ulcers and digestive discomfort that didn’t match his diet. The culprit? An additive in his toothpaste (sodium lauryl sulfate, a common foaming agent). Once he switched brands, his symptoms improved almost overnight.

5. Hidden ingredients –  Jenny’s story

Priya struggled with itchy skin and didn’t see a pattern in her meals—until we looked more closely at sauces and marinades. A preservative in her favourite stir-fry sauce turned out to be the trigger. Reading labels carefully and choosing fresh, whole ingredients gave her relief she hadn’t thought possible.

The bigger picture

These examples show that sensitivities aren’t always obvious. They can come from everyday items we barely think about, and they can vary widely from person to person. That’s why food intolerance testing, elimination diets, and keeping a symptom diary can be such valuable tools.

If you’ve been struggling with unexplained symptoms, remember: it may not always be the “usual suspects.” Sometimes the answer lies in the small, overlooked details.
